MADD about wine in grocery stores
After researching the issues, Mothers Against Drunk Driving has taken a position against the selling of wine in grocery stores, a bill recently introduced into legislation. MADD's mission statement reads: The mission of Mother's Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
Throughout the past 2 1/2 years, MADD has worked extensively with teens across the state to determine workable solutions in the prevention of underage drinking. Students expressed a great concern when the idea of alcohol being sold in grocery stores was presented.
Teens involved in MADD's Youth In Action Program commented that wine in grocery stores would give them more locations and more opportunities to obtain alcohol.
Grocery stores employ high school students, and students regularly shop at these stores. It puts pressure on peers to sell to their friends and can present problems with the grocery stores. Compliance check data in Minnesota shows that grocery stores that sell 3.2 beer have worse compliance rates with youth access than liquor stores.
Liquor stores do not allow underage people to enter their establishments, but grocery stores can not have this regulation. When teens enter a grocery store, they virtually go unnoticed and that creates a perfect environment to get their hands on alcohol. MADD and the Youth In Action teams do not want wine to be sold in grocery stores. We are concerned with the number of youths already being sacrificed due to underage drinking. We need your support to keep wine out of grocery stores and out of the hands of our youths.
